Olivier Bello
Arsenal Modelist

The model at 1/36th scale of Olivier Bello

Just as The 74 Guns Ship (le vaisseau de 74 canons) presented on this site, this model built after the plans of Jean Boudriot, is presented so as to appreciate her sleek hull framework as well as her armament and her rigging.

The ship is built of pearwood except for the carvings, which are made of boxwood, while the metal parts are made of brass, blackened with a solution of selenium dioxide. Soldering of these pieces is with silver solder in the traditional way of the jewelers.

The tarred oakum caulking is represented with fine strips of walnut sandwiched between the planks of the hull, deck and the quarterdeck.

Each cannon is personalized with an engraving on the edge of the trunnion (name of the iron master and the location of the iron-works) and breech (weight, year of manufacture and serial number), so in this manner they are all unlike.

Provided with a mobile clapper, the ship's bell is decorated with a fleur-de-lis, soldered on the foreside.

The blocks are all functional, with pins and sheaves, and in exact proportions with the original ship.

The rigging made on a miniature ropewalk, according to the contemporary rules, is made up of ropes of some twenty different sizes.

To avoid luster, which would have been unrealistic, the sails are of Chinese silk and to keep the widths of the seams in scale, a thread was pulled out all along the length of the sail to achieve a perfect parallelism.

Finally, this model is made up of 9,891 pieces and 34,663 pegs, not to mention the presence of nine figures in proper uniforms of the era that set off the display of the ship and help to better appreciate the elegance of her body.

The dimensions of this model are as follows: 1.7m (length), 0.4m (width) and 1.15m (height).
