Olivier Bello
Arsenal Modelist

Olivier Bello's model at 1/36th scale
Some Information on the Modeler's Work

A scale of 1/36 was chosen for the construction of this model, with the hull unplanked to starboard in order to show the whole of the inside arrangements, whereas the port side planking will only start at the first deck in order to show the ship's carpentry structure. This should not prevent the full rigging of the ship. The model will be constructed of pear wood, while mahogany will be used for treenails, and walnut to simulate the hull and deck caulking.

Two novelties are being considered for this new shipyard. The first involves the representation on board the Boullongne of the whole crew, as well as all the passengers likely to be aboard, illustrating the numerous types of activities that occupy life at sea. The second one is to attempt to install some realistic lighting inside the hold and at the various levels of the model, in order to provide a better understanding of living conditions in those days.

In order to get close to the real thing, all blocks will be functional, including their sheaves and pins. The completed model will have an overall length of 1.93 m, and height of 1.18 m. The plans are by J. Boudriot and from the Archéologie Navale Française series by Editions ANCRE.
